From the Tony-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Seussical and Ragtime) comes a highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid. Based on the novel My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, a tale of romance, tragedy, redemption, and rebirth features an astounding score, a live orchestra, and captivating choreography set to an irresistible Calypso beat. The Broadway production garnered eight Tony nominations, including for “Best Musical” and “Best Score.”

The musical tells the story of a peasant girl, Ti Moune, who rescues and falls in love with a wealthy boy, Daniel, from the other side of her island. Unbeknownst to the girl, the pompous gods who preside over the island wager a bet with one another over which is stronger – love or death – with the stakes being Ti Moune’s life.

When she pursues Daniel, who has returned to his people, Ti Moune is shunned because of her lowly status. Her determination and capacity to love are not enough to win Daniel’s heart, and Ti Moune eventually pays the ultimate price. However, the gods turn Ti Moune into a tree, which grows so strong and tall that it breaks the wall separating the societies.

The musical is presented by the award-winning 3-D Theatricals, which has been hailed by the Orange County Register for its “beautiful, impressive staging.” Broadway World Orange County praised the company’s “eye-popping sets and immensely talented performers.”
