Downey Mayor to Run for California Senate

Mario Guerra, mayor of the city of Downey, announced plans to run for the state Senate in the 32nd District, which includes Cerritos and Artesia.

Downey Mayor Mario Guerra announced Tuesday he is running for the state Senate in the 32nd District, pledging to bring character and integrity back to Sacramento.

"As your state senator, I'll work to restore the public's trust in state government," Guerra, a Republican, said. "Public officials' integrity and ethics must be beyond reproach with no exceptions."

Guerra also said he would "focus on fundamentals" as a senator, promising to bring good jobs, reduce crime and improve education to his district that also includes Cerritos, Artesia, Commerce, Montebello, Pico Rivera, Whittier, Hacienda Heights, La Habra Heights, Santa Fe Springs, Norwalk, La Mirada, Buena Park, Bellflower and Hawaiian Gardens.

Guerra was elected to the Downey City Council in 2006 and re-elected in 2010. He also co-founded the Scanlon-Guerra-Burke insurance agency.
