California Fires Latest: 44 Dead, 209,000 Acres Burned

The death toll is expected to rise as dozens of Californians remain missing, officials said. Find out how you can help.

More than 8,000 firefighters were at the frontlines Monday, continuing their battle against the deadly wildfires that swept across California in recent days. As of Monday, the death toll rose to 31 with dozens more reported missing. More than 209,000 acres have burned on both ends of the Golden State, destroying nearly 7,000 structures, injuring firefighters and threatening a Southern California water supply.

The Camp Fire started around 6:30 a.m. Thursday in Paradise, about 1.5 hours away from Sacramento. The blaze, which has been described as the most destructive in state history, has charred 113,000 acres and claimed the lives of 42 people. As of Monday evening, the fire was 30 percent contained.

The Woosley Fire erupted Thursday afternoon in Ventura County. The 93,000-acre fire was 30 percent contained as of Monday morning. The blaze destroyed at least 170 homes and forced the evacuation of more than 200,000 residents in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. On Saturday, officials said two people were found dead in the fire area in Malibu.

Around 2 p.m. Thursday, the Hill Fire sparked in Southern California, in the Ventura County area. That blaze is about 85 percent contained after burning more than 4,500 acres, according to Ventura County Fire.

Gov. Jerry Brown announced Sunday he is requesting a "major disaster declaration" from President Donald Trump, in addition to an earlier emergency declaration signed by Trump that will provide federal funds to help firefighters.
