California Fires Latest: 50 Deaths; Search For Bodies Continues

Thousands of firefighters braced themselves for yet another day of strong gusts and low humidity in their battle against two deadly wildfires burning on both ends of California. Tuesday came as the death toll rose to a staggering 48 deaths in the Camp Fire, officially the deadliest wildfire in recorded state history, with dozens more reported missing.

Cal Fire officials said 8,700 firefighters are working to contain the wildfires that have burned more than 225,000 acres and destroyed thousands of structures.

The Camp Fire started around 6:30 a.m. Thursday in Paradise, about 1.5 hours away from Sacramento. The blaze, which has been described as the most destructive and deadliest in state history, has charred 130,000 acres and claimed the lives of 48 people. As of Tuesday evening, the fire was 35 percent contained.

The Woosley Fire erupted Thursday afternoon in Ventura County. The 97,000-acre fire was 40 percent contained as of Tuesday evening. The blaze destroyed more than 430 structures and forced the evacuation of more than 200,000 residents in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. On Saturday, officials said two people were found dead in the fire area in Malibu.

Gov. Jerry Brown announced Sunday he is requesting a "major disaster declaration" from President Donald Trump, in addition to an earlier emergency declaration signed by Trump that will provide federal funds to help firefighters.
