Newsum said she turned on the television to learn a fire was closeby and that evacuations were ordered. She was home alone with her cats, the news station reported.

"I went out and was standing on my front porch," Newsum said.

That's when Dane Ray Cummings, a longtime garbage collector, came rolling up to her house.

"He said, 'Get your things together quick. We'll get out of here,'" Newsum told KCRA.

Cummings said he and others lifted Newsum into the truck, fastened her seatbelt and drove off.

Since that day, the two have formed a bond.

"I wish I had known her when she was younger," Cummings told the news station. "I would've married her."

The blaze, which erupted Nov. 8, has killed at least 76 people with more than 1,000 people reported missing. The most destructive fire in California history, the blaze also destroyed more than 12,000 structures.
