Horse Hides In Pool As Camp Fire Scorches Through Paradise

The horse was "shaking uncontrollably" said her rescuers.

PARADISE, CA -- A horse is alive Wednesday after apparently hiding in a pool as the deadly Camp Fire scorched through the small Northern California town of Paradise. In a Facebook post, Paradise resident Jeff Hill said he was checking on a house when he found the female horse.

"We stumbled upon this girl who had given up and had the look of defeat in her eyes," Hill said. "There’s no telling how long she was there but she was shivering uncontrollably and ultimately lost her fight."

Hill wrote that the horse was stuck in the pool's cover but it "prevented her from drowning."

"We scrambled to unhook the pool cover and pulled her to the shallow end where we guided her up the steps," Hill told his Facebook followers. "She got out, shook off, loved on us for a few minutes as a thank you and walked off assuring us that she was ok."

Hill described the interaction as a "glimpse of happiness" among all the sadness he felt during the Camp Fire.

The Facebook post quickly went viral. After it was posted for three days, it received more than 24,000 Facebook Likes and was shared more than 11,000 times.

Fire officials said the Camp Fire, which erupted Thursday, is the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history, claiming the lives of 48 people with the death toll expected to rise. After scorching more than 135,000 acres and burning thousands of homes, firefighters hope to contain the blaze by the end of the month.
