The driver was found to be driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

Citrus Heights Police officers were reminded Friday evening why their DUI checkpoint program was so important when officers attempted to stop man spotted for reckless driving in the area of Sayonara Drive.
Officers attempted to make an enforcement stop of the driver, later identified as Michael Ballard, 25. Police say while pursuing the driver, Ballard drove the wrong way on Greenback Lane, struck a center divider, and destroyed city property including a curb and fencing.

As the chase continued police were ordered to abandon the checkpoint immediately as Ballard approached the scene, according to the release. Police explain Ballard turned onto a side street just prior to reaching the checkpoint.
Ballard’s vehicle became disabled and he eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit a perimeter was set up and Ballard was apprehended minutes later. According to police, "Ballard demonstrated objective signs and symptoms of intoxication." He was taken into custody for several violations including driving under the influence.
