In general, tree trimming should be put off until the fall/winter unless the tree poses a threat. It is best to trim trees during dormancy when they have no leaves. Pruning of plants is best accomplished in the fall or winter during their dormant season. Trimming removes leaves from trees. Less leaves mean less food flowing through the tree prohibiting next year’s growth, which will cause the tree to be less full next spring. Pests and disease are also more affluent in the warmer months. Open wounds are attractive to pests and disease, freshly cut trees are more vulnerable to an infestation.

Trimming of any City tree is prohibited, unless previously approved by the City. The City trims trees on a 7-8 grid trimming cycle. This year’s trimming has concluded. Next year, all City trees south of Foothill Boulevard to the southern City boundary between Indian Hill Boulevard and the westerly City boundary are scheduled for trimming. Grid trimming will begin in late October or early November when the weather cools.
If you feel that your City tree is need of trimming or other maintenance, contact Community Services at (909) 399-5431.
