La Verne Police Restarts Its Homeless Outreach Services Team
The team is made up of 10 officers who reach out to the local homeless populations in La Verne, Claremont, Azusa, Pomona and West Covina.

LA VERNE, CA — With California’s coronavirus restrictions set to expire June 15, the La Verne Police Department has reinstated its Homeless Outreach Services Team.
The team reaches out to the local homeless populations in the city and in surrounding communities including Claremont, West Covina and Azusa in order to get them connected to social services and support groups, according to a statement from the department. The team’s operations were suspended last year in response to the pandemic, according to a statement from the department.
Although the department said all its officers regularly conduct community outreach, the 10 members of the outreach services team are specifically trained in helping the local homeless population. Each member oversees a specific area in the region and partners with groups like Union Station Homeless Services and Tri-City Mental Health to connected unhoused individuals with the help they require.

“Tailoring our approach to each individual allows us to ensure that they get the resources they need to get back on their feet, whether it be veteran assistance, mental health care or temporary shelter placement,” La Verne police Sgt. Michael Martinez said in a statement.
In addition to the department’s team, La Verne officials have also teamed with Union Station Homeless Serves to launch a new program for families and individuals at risk of becoming homeless, the police said. The Prevention and Diversion Program officers financial aid to help cover rent, utility bills, moving, food and transportation costs to those in need.
