CLAREMONT, CA — Residents of an Upland home fled for their lives after a small plane crashed down on their roof, officials reported Thursday. Smoke could be seen from homes in Claremont, Patch was told.
"A small plane crashed into a residence in the area of Mountain and 15th," Upland Police Chief Darren Goodman said. The home "was a total loss," he said.
At this time, the pilot of the aircraft is the only confirmed casualty from the crash, Goodman said.

According to the investigation, the plane had deployed some sort of parachute before the crash. The type of plane and the pilot's identity were not known as of this report.
According to the FAA, the plane was a single-engine Cirrus SR22 flying from Torrance Municipal Airport to Cable Airport in Upland.

"The pilot was the only person on board," Ian Gregor, spokesman for the FAA told Patch.
The FAA and NTSB will investigate the crash, and the NTSB will take the lead. It typically takes the NTSB a year or more to determine a probable cause for an accident, Gregor said.
