Bull Takes Freeway Stroll Until CHP Mooves In, Steers Traffic

No bull: California Highway Patrol arrived to find a big bovine in the westbound fast lane of state Highway 4 in Concord.

CONCORD, CA — No injuries or cattle calls were reported when a bull took up the fast lane during the Thursday morning commute on state Highway 4 in Concord.

"A local owner was doing work on a fence and the bull got out," California Highway Patrol Officer Brandon Correia said. "Quite thankfully, nobody hit the bull."

That's because CHP responded and did traffic breaks, slowing down cars along the westbound side of the freeway near Port Chicago Highway.

"If you hit a bull that big, you are going to have major damage to your car and you are going to get injured," Correia told Patch.

It was "an interesting morning to say the least," Correia said, but all went well as CHP assisted with getting the big bovine off the freeway and tracking down its owner to pick him up.

In the five years Correia has worked in CHP's Contra Costa area, he said it is not uncommon to see horses and livestock on the roadway.

"We have a protocol, we do traffic breaks, and a lot of times the owner will get a hold of us first," he said.

In Thursday's incident, the bull was wandering near Diablo Creek Golf Course so he may have been heading to enjoy some 9th-hole beverages, Correia said.

We're glad everyone was able to moove along.
