Concord Naval Weapons Station: City May Disband Citizen Committee

CONCORD, CA — The Concord City Council on Tuesday will discuss disbanding a community advisory committee formed to help inform the city's Concord Naval Weapons Station Reuse Project, since the project is on hold as the city seeks a new master developer.

According to a city report, the reuse project's Concord Naval Weapons Station Reuse Project Community Advisory Committee was formed in 2016 to provide community input into plans to remake the former Concord Naval Weapons Station in northeastern Concord into a new 2,300-acre community with 13,000 housing units, a regional park and millions of square feet of commercial space.

But when the original reuse project master developer Lennar Concord LLC's exclusive negotiating agreement expired in March, after the City Council voted in March not to give Lennar more time to negotiate with the area's labor unions, the whole project could be delayed for years as the city starts over again in its search for a master developer.

Accordingly, a city report says, "there is no clear timeline as to when a draft Specific Plan will be available for public review."

The whole community participation process isn't expected to resume until after a new reuse project master developer is selected.

The Concord City Council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday; it's a virtual meeting, and can be viewed via the city's website.
