Driver Fatally Crashes Into Parked Semi Near Buchanan Field: CHP

The 35-year-old driver died at the scene of the crash, California Highway Patrol officials said.

CONCORD, CA— A 35-year-old Walnut Creek man died in a solo-vehicle crash Monday night in unincorporated Concord near Buchanan Field Airport. The man, whose name was pending release by the Contra Costa County Sheriff-Coroner's office, was driving a gray 2011 Suzuki SX4 hatchback when he crashed directly into the back of a parked 2014 Freightliner, the California Highway Patrol said.

The fatal incident was reported around 10:15 p.m. on Marsh Drive, just south of Sally Ride Drive, according to CHP Contra Costa officials.

"Tragically, the solo male occupant ... was killed in the crash," CHP officials said. "The Freightliner was unoccupied and no other vehicles were involved."

CHP's preliminary investigation indicated the man was driving northbound on Marsh and was approaching the big rig — parked along the eastern curb — when his car veered toward the semi and crashed directly into the back of the truck's trailer.

The collision caused major damage to both vehicles.

According to the CHP, the man was still inside the car when emergency personnel arrived.

He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"At this time it is unknown if alcohol or drug impairment were a factor in this collision but it is still under investigation," CHP officials said. "... Witnesses and information from the scene indicate the Suzuki was possibly speeding over the posted speed limit prior the collision."

CHP is asking any witnesses who have not already spoken with them to call the CHP Martinez office at 925-646-4980.
