Fallen East Bay Officer Memorialized On Highway 4

BREAKING: A resolution dedicating a Contra Costa County section of the state highway has been approved.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA -- A Hayward police sergeant killed in the line of duty has been memorialized with a section of state Highway 4 designated the Police Sergeant Scott Lunger Memorial Highway, a state official said Friday. Highway 4 from Balfour Road in Brentwood to Laurel Road in Antioch is designated in honor of Lunger, according to Assemblyman Jim Frazier, D-Discovery Bay, the author of the resolution making the designation.

The resolution passed both houses of the state Legislature and was enacted Wednesday.

"Sgt. Lunger was an exemplary peace officer who served with distinction and honor," Frazier said in a statement. "His loss had a devastating impact on his family, his local community and the entire East Bay law enforcement community. Fortunately, the Legislature has a process that allows us to remember him."

Lunger conducted a traffic stop in Hayward on July 22, 2015. As Lunger approached the vehicle, a man in the vehicle opened fire, striking and killing Lunger. The suspect was later taken into custody.

Lunger was the father of two daughters and a 15-year veteran of the force. He was a member of the Hayward Police Department's SWAT team and gang detail.
