Free Donuts in Concord Friday for National Donut Day
National Donut Day is June 7. Here's where you can get a free donut and try Concord's best doughy treats.
Homer Simpson's favorite day of the year is the first Friday in June — also known as National Donut Day, which is June 7 this year.
For Concordians, that means a free donut at the Concord Krispy Creme and other participating donut shops.
The celebration of the deep fried doughy treat has its roots in the trenches of World War I, when war-weary soldiers would take a break by stopping by a "hut" — a makeshift coffee shop — where "lassies" doled out coffee and donuts. In 1938, the Salvation Army in Chicago wanted to recognize those women's efforts and started National Donut Day.
Nowadays, National Donut Day efforts in some cities include fundraisers associated with the Salvation Army. Others simply recognize the doughy confection by handing out free donuts.
