'The Gate' Author, John Van Der Zee To Speak At Concord Event

The event, part of Concord Historical Society's Speaker Series, is free and open to the public.

CONCORD, CA — Award-winning author John van der Zee is set to appear at Concord Museum and Event Center as part of Concord Historical Society's Speakers Series. During the event scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, van der Zee will talk about his most-recognized books: "The Gate: The True Story of the Design and Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge," Simon and Schuster, 1987; and "Canyon: The Story of the Last Rustic Community in Metropolitan America," Harcourt, 1972.

Van der Zee has published 13 books, four novels and nine works of nonfiction. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Examiner and Chronicle, Town & Country, Zyzzya and Salon.com.

Awards won by the accomplished writer include the James K. Phelan Award for Fiction in 1964 and the H.K. McCann Award for Advertising Professionalism in 1978 and again in 1988. From 1978 through 1984, van der Zee was also a Clio Award winner or finalist.

The event at 1928 Clayton Road is free and open to the public, according to a news release from the Concord Historical Society.
