A group of mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus inΒ Antioch, according to the Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District. Β It is the first group of mosquitoes that have tested positive forΒ the virus in Antioch this year, according to the district. They were found inΒ the area of Eighth and A streets. Β
District spokeswoman Deborah Bass said West Nile virus activityΒ remains steadfast.To reduce the risk of infection, district officials adviseΒ residents to dump out standing water and wear mosquito repellent. Β Two species of mosquitoes in the county feed on birds in the areaΒ and potentially could infect people, according to the district. Β
Symptoms from the virus include fever, headache, tiredness, bodyΒ aches and swollen lymph glands and can last a few days to several weeks. InΒ some cases, the virus can result in death, according to the district. Β Forty-four people in the county have been diagnosed with West NileΒ virus since 2005. Β This year, 13 groups of mosquitoes, 63 dead birds and six chickensΒ have tested positive for the virus in Contra Costa County.
