'Spare The Air' Alert Issued For Today

BAY AREA, CA – A second straight Spare the Air alert has been issued in the Bay Area for Sunday, regional air quality officials said.

The alert about excessive smog expected in the area is the 21st of the season, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. The 20th was issued for today.

Motor vehicle exhaust combined with hot temperatures and light winds is expected to create unhealthy levels of the smog, otherwise known as ozone, which can cause throat irritation, congestion, chest pain or other
respiratory issues, particularly for young children and seniors.

To improve air quality in the region, residents are encouraged to carpool, bike, walk or take transit instead of driving alone.

Air quality is expected to improve by the middle of next week as temperatures drop and wind speeds pick up, according to the air district.
