'Little Shop Of Horrors' Comes To The Coronado Playhouse
Coronado Playhouse will present 'Little Shop of Horrors' Friday, Sept. 8 through Sunday, Oct. 15. Tickets available online.

From the Coronado Playhouse: Coronado Playhouse presents Little Shop of Horrors, opening Friday Sept. 8 and running until Sunday, Oct. 15 at Coronado Playhouse. Little Shop of Horrors is an horticultural horror story: sci-fi spoof musical with a hilarious and fearsome plot and a collection of great songs. Seymour Krelborn, the assistant at Mushnik’s Flower Shop in downtrodden Skid Row, becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers a strange and exotic plant. He names it Audrey Two in order to impress glamorous Audrey, the colleague he’s secretly in love with. Audrey Two quickly starts to wilt, putting Seymour’s job and dream future with Audrey at risk. Accidentally pricking his finger, Seymour discovers Audrey Two needs a little more than plant food to thrive. The plant grows into a bad-tempered, R&B-singing carnivore whose voracious appetite becomes increasingly difficult to satisfy.
Inspired by the much darker and far-less-intentionally campy 1960 Roger Corman film of the same name, this rock musical version of Little Shop of Horrors premiered Off Broadway in 1982 before enjoying a successful five-year run on Broadway, then in London’s West End, and eventually inspiring the 1986 film version by veteran puppeteer Frank Oz. The musical score by Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken (Disney’s A Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Pocahontas) features a string of incredible Doo-Wop and Motown-style numbers, with wonderfully evocative titles such as “Somewhere That’s Green,” “Suppertime,” “Grow For Me,” and the power ballad love duet, “Suddenly Seymour.”
Shirley Johnston makes her directorial debut at Coronado Playhouse with Little Shop of Horrors, having appeared on the CPH stage in last season’s production of A Chorus Line. She has teamed up with the A Chorus Line musical director, Kirk Valles, a familiar name to CPH audiences having musically directed many there over the past ten years.
