Principal Karl Mueller has presided over his final graduation at Coronado High School.

Mueller informed school officials Monday that he is resigning to move to the San Dieguito Union High School District and take over the principal's slot at Canyon Crest Academy in Carmel Valley.

Coronado Unified School District Superintendent Jeffrey Felix has asked assistant principal Jenny Moore to take over as CHS principal. She is considering the offer, he said.

Felix described her as someone “who performs admirably (and) has overwhelming dedication to the school.”

In an email Mueller sent to staff – and released by the district – he recalled his eight years at the campus and said he decided to take the new position Friday, two days after CHS's commencement ceremony.

“I am so proud of the collaborative work that we have accomplished as a team at CHS. We have added programs that are aligned with our students’ interests, maintained and promoted academic rigor, celebrated, consoled, created, and laughed — together,” he wrote.

“What I will miss the most is the culture we have cultivated — the connection between faculty and each member of our student body, the respect we share, the trusting environment where children feel safe to be themselves, and the strong Islander pride that made coming to work each day purposeful,” he concluded.

Felix, in announcing Mueller's departure, praised him for “the quality of his work and the dedication he has shown.”

“We will miss Karl and all that he has added to this district and to CHS as a principal, administrator and as an educator,” he wrote.

Mueller was honored this spring as Career Technical Administrator of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators.

Canyon Crest Academy has an enrollment of about 1,900 and includes Del Mar, Encinitas, Carmel Valley, Solana Beach and Rancho Santa Fe. Last year it notched the highest API scores for public schools in San Diego County.

Coronado High has an enrollment of about 1,100 and during Mueller's tenure was named a National Blue Ribbon School and a California Distinguished School.
