Sailors Safe After Boat Capsizes off Coronado

The Coast Guard rescued the crew two miles offshore.

A 12-foot recreational sailboat capsized about two miles west of Silver Strand State Beach and a U.S. Coast Guard crew pulled its two sailors unhurt from the water, Coast Guard officials said.

An Alameda-based Coast Guard crew in the Coronado area spotted the small vessel about 2:30 p.m. Friday with one person on its upturned hull and the other clinging to its side, according to Petty Officer 1st Class Henry Dunphy.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Waesche launched a small boat and rescued the two boaters, Dunphy said.

Another crew from Coast Guard Station San Diego righted the capsized vessel and took it, along with the boaters, to Shelter Island, Dunphy said.
