Sewage-Contaminated Runoff Closes Silver Strand Shoreline In Coronado

Signs warning of contamination hazards will stand along the affected beaches until testing indicates waters are safe for recreational use.

CORONADO, CA — One day after lifting the closure, the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health on Tuesday again extended a water contact closure in the area of the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Imperial Beach shorelines north to include the Silver Strand shoreline up to Avenida Lunar in Coronado.

The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health first extended the closure to the Silver Strand shoreline last week, warning that sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary due to recent rainfall. Although that closure was lifted Monday, county officials said Tuesday that residents should again avoid the water.

Signs warning of contamination hazards will stand along the affected beaches until testing indicates waters are safe enough for recreational use, officials said.
