Stay Out! Water Contact Closure Issued For Silver Strand Shoreline In Coronado

Sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary due to recent rainfall. Water is now moving north.

CORONADO, CA – A water contact closure in the area of the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Imperial Beach shorelines has been extended north to include the Silver Strand shoreline up to Avenida Lunar in Coronado.

The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health issued the closure Thursday, warning that sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary due to recent rainfall. County officials said sample results and observations indicate northward moving ocean currents and contamination of ocean water at Silver Strand is occurring.

Signs warning of contamination hazards will stand along the affected beaches until testing indicates waters are safe enough for recreational use, officials said.
