Up to 3,500 bicyclists are scheduled to ride a 25-mile course today in the eighth annual Bike the Bay in San Diego and the South Bay.
The event began at 7 a.m. at Embarcadero Marina Park South in downtown San Diego.
Riders go from there across the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge and follow the Bayshore Bikeway into Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, National City and back to San Diego.

“The (bridge) and Bayshore Bikeway provide some of the most incredible sight-seeing opportunities in San Diego, best viewed in the open-air, from outside an automobile,” said Andy Hanshaw, executive director of the San Diego County Bike Coalition. “The ride is, in a single word, picturesque.”
Bike the Bay is the only opportunity for bicyclists to pedal across the bridge each year. One lane is closed to vehicular traffic to accommodate the bikes.
