Casa Oaxaca Wows with $25 Wine-Tasting Menu

Unlimited wine, three courses and live music!

Got goat? Our dining adventure at Casa Oaxaca continues, with goat, plato de cabra, at the hub of their three-course monthly wine-tasting menu.

For $25, no wonder this place was packed. Several gatherings of families and friends crowded the restaurant, many enjoying the last slice of summer on their adjacent patio.

Music wafted through the air, from a melodious couple that performed familiar tunes throughout the evening. Music can break or make a dining experience and it was nice to have their selections accentuate the atmosphere.

Along with the usual samplings of Spanish wines, there was zesty sangria on hand. Our friend Lola claimed that it was comparable to some of the best sangrias that she’s enjoyed from Spain. High marks from this foodie, who seems to know her way around Oaxacan cuisine.

Owner Rogelio Martinez’s recipes pay homage to his grandmother who taught him everything he knows. We began with their Tacos de Jamaica, a refreshing vegetarian dish with hibiscus flowers sautéed in red wine, always refreshing starter. And then came the goat. I felt a little intimidated at first, but I’m not about to back down from a culinary challenge. After all, last month I had grasshoppers. So, I plunged in, the goat a pleasant surprise, and quite succulent. In fact, goat meat is low in fat and so is healthier than many other red meats. Now we’re talking. The added rice and beans rounded out the entrée, charting more familiar territory. I’m a fan!

We added a densely packed mound of chips and guacamole to our meal. Many Mexican restaurants skimp on this dish. Casa Oaxaca’s was packed with thick chunks of avocado and a generous flanking of chips.

Dessert completed our adventure with their Platanos Flameados con Mezcal, fried bananas cooked with mescal and orange juice, always a winner in my book.

How about some cinnamon coffee or Mexican hot chocolate? For $2.50, you can’t go wrong.

If you haven’t checked out this homey place, you owe yourself a favor. They have many celebratory events, enabling you to get more familiar with Oaxacan cuisine. Check out their website for more information.
