Wonderful Wine Tasting at Casa Oaxaca

$25 is a real bargain for unlimited wine and a three-course meal

We just discovered a real bargain in Culver City. For about $25, you can enjoy an unlimited wine tasting coupled with a three- course meal at one of our new favorites-Casa Oaxaca.

If you haven’t tried this place, it's a real gem of a restaurant. Tucked away on Venice Boulevard, you can bypass the throngs of people clamoring to see and be seen in downtown Culver City. Here, you’ll find old world charm in a place that is a secret to many. This is our third time visiting, and each time we are even more impressed.

Tonight we participated in their monthly wine tasting, featuring a sampling of many Spanish wines that were unfamiliar to me. Live music played in the background as we enjoyed a generous assortment of whites and reds. Then we were graced with a three-course meal that again showcased the aptitude of owner Rogelio Martinez, who has mastered his grandmother‘s recipes and brings them to life.

What fun it is to share adventure dining with neighbors as well. We all started with a delicious quesadilla, stuffed with corn and cheese. The presentation alone was enough to make my mouth water.

An added surprise was the orange garnish, displaying tiny taste of Oaxacan ants. If you’re not familiar with Oaxacan cuisine, down there, insects are all the rage. In fact, ant eggs are known to be an aphrodisiac, so think about that when you’re lining up to renew your Viagra prescription.

The second course included a colorful chili relleno, brimming with chicken and a variety of spices, or a tamale stuffed with mushrooms. The relleno was a bit too spicy for me, so I swaped plates with my dining companion. I loved the tamale, dense with flavor and a bit more tame. All tamales now pale by comparison to these. I can't wait to order them again.

Their delicious flan rounded out the dinner, with a few of us imbibing in their cinnamon-infused coffee. I can’t handle caffeine except at breakfast, although the few sips I enjoyed made me wish for morning.

Now I'm bored with the same old entrees when I go to Mexican restaurants. The food at Casa Oaxaca is far more interesting. We have abandoned our usual haunts in favor of this charming restaurant, which continues to inspire us.
