Sheriff's officials said deputies tried to stop the suspect outside of the Staples store. But he pulled out a knife and ran toward De Anza Boulevard and into the Donut Wheel.

Deputies surrounded the shop and negotiated with the suspect until he ran from the shop. Inside the shop the suspect appeared to have taken cash from the cash register and set a garbage can on fire, sheriff's officials said.

He is being arrested on suspicion of theft, resisting arrest, brandishing a knife, attempted carjacking and arson, according to the sheriff's office.
