BACKGROUND ON THE RELATIONSHIP
In 2009 typhoon Morakot, was the deadliest typhoon to impact Taiwan in recorded history, devastating the mountain areas around the city of Kaohsiung. Rotary International pulled together a reconstruction grant partnering the local Rotary Club of Kaohsiung West with a Club in Osaka, Japan and Rotary Club of Cupertino, California.
In 2016, members from these international partners traveled to Kaohsiung to visit the affected areas and review two new projects to help Kaohsiung County mountain children, most rural elementary school students, by helping the school build computer network facilities to connect to the outside world and join online learning classes. The second project included a large water storage tank for their need.
“Now, four years later it is Cupertino that has an urgent need, with the shortage of masks for our first responders and other service providers,” said Orrin Mahoney, past president of Cupertino Rotary and Past District Governor 5170.
“Thanks to the connection formed years ago, the President Elect, Joseph Liao.
from the Kaohsiung West Club obtained 4000 masks and donated them to the Cupertino Rotary Club for local distribution,” he added.
“We thank our international project partner, Rotary club Kaohsiung West of Taiwan, who provided and ordered medical face masks from Shang-Hai and donated to our club to disseminate where needed,” said Annie Ho, Cupertino Rotary Club member.
“They plan on sending another shipment to us in the coming weeks, so effort will continue as we identify more locations and individuals that need protection,”
she added.
