Donning Pink is the New Way Officials Show Support

City Councilmembers all came out in support of a local group training for a breast cancer awareness walk this month.

Maybe fashionistas are right: pink is the new black because it’s become a popular color among city officials the last few weeks. (Though really, none of the officials could be accused of being fashionistas.)

The mayor and his four councilmember colleagues showed their support of breast cancer awareness by joining a group of Cupertino women who are training for a Susan G. Komen 60-mile Walk for a Cure in San Diego. (They’re about a week away from the big event—go for it ladies!)

They all sported some pink (though Councilmember Orrin Mahoney’s only pink was in his rose-colored cheeks) to show their support. Councilmember Rod Sinks even joined in on the training walk. Councilmember Barry Chang popped on his pink on Friday and the most recent official to slither into a pink shirt was Councilmember Gilbert Wong who joined the group on Saturday.

The women part of team Never Give Up invited the community to join them on Oct. 27 when they made a 14-mile loop between the five local high schools. Mayor Mark Santoro was there for that one along with about 60 other walkers and supporters.

The one-day event to bring attention to breast cancer turned into multiple days of inviting the community out and sport a little pink in support. It didn’t take much prodding to get the City Council out there and team member Alysa Sakkas has been tickled pink at the support she and her teammates have received.

Editor's note: I just realized that Chang and Wong cost me an additional $20!
