Light Pollution, Bird Safety To Be Discussed At Cupertino Meeting

CUPERTINO, CA — Design guidelines for bird safety and light pollution will be discussed at a community meeting Wednesday evening in Cupertino, city officials said.

Wednesday's meeting from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Cupertino Room at the Quinlan Community Center at 10185 N. Stelling Road is meant in part to give residents the opportunity to offer their opinions on the possible regulations.

A second meeting will be held on Feb. 20 at the same time and place.

Other Bay Area cities like San Francisco, Oakland and Richmond have adopted regulations that regulate building design standards for bird safety, such as requiring buildings adjacent to open spaces, water or parks to avoid using highly reflective or highly transparent glass that cause birds to crash into them. Cupertino has no such regulation.

Other cities' Dark Sky policies, like the one Cupertino is also considering, seek to limit outdoor lighting that is misdirected, excessive or unnecessary, according to a Cupertino city staff report on the issue.
