Shin Shin Works to Improve Education in Rural China

In 15 years a local charity has donated more than $10 million and countless hours to help improve classrooms and education for children in China’s impoverished rural areas. On Saturday, Shin Shin Educational Foundation will hold its Annual Appreciation and Recognition Celebration at Quinlan Center where the partially tax-deductible event will turn from honors and appreciation into buffet dinner and a ball.

The event that starts at 5:30 p.m. costs $50 per person ($30 for tax deductible donation) or $400 per table of eight seats.

“The money goes to a good cause—strengthening education in impoverished regions of China. We are all unpaid volunteers in this organization,” says Chris Zhang.

Since Shin Shin began it has renovated or constructed 333 schools or classrooms in 23 provinces benefitting 120,000 children in rural China.

The assistance Shin Shin provides is broad from electronics to shelter. It developed a computer lab in 2005 and grew that number to 24 by 2010 and provided computers to 208 classrooms.

The other extreme Shin Shin provides is simply making sure students have a roof over their heads that doesn’t leak and desks to sit at.
