Small Quake Tuesday Morning East of San Jose
The 2.8-magnitude temblor was on the Calaveras Fault, which last produced a notable earthquake in 2007 when a 5.4-magnitude quake struck.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY-A 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck east of the Santa Clara Valley this morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake struck at 6:37 a.m., was centered 9 miles east-southeast of Milpitas, and had a depth of 3.6 miles, USGS officials said.
There have not been any reports of damage.

The temblor was on the Calaveras Fault, which last produced a notable earthquake in October 2007 when a 5.4-magnitude quake struck, according to the USGS.
According to information on the USGS website, the northern segment of the Calaveras Fault is virtually locked and this segment of the fault creeps at a rate between 2 and 3 mm/yr.

At the southern end of its central stretch it creeps at about 14 mm/yr dropping northward to about 6 mm/yr (0.24 inch/yr) of creep at its intersection with the Hayward Fault.
The total slip rate on the Calaveras Fault is approximately 6 mm/yr north of its intersection with the Hayward Fault and is approximately 15 mm/yr to the south.
