'Summer Nature Days' Camp Adds Shoreline Site

Written By L.A. Chung

If bug hunts and owl pellet dissections sounds like your kids' idea of a good time, don't hold out any longer.

Here's a summer camp with all the wiggly, muck-hiking goods, thanks to three agencies that have teamed up for a week of fun.

The Midpeninsula Open Space District has announced its partnership with the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society and Shoreline Park (City of Mountain View) to offer a nature discovery summer day camp July 22 to 26 for children entering grades 2-6.

Each camp day will be at a different location with a unique theme. Parents will be responsible for transportation to all locations (but see the note about Friday, July 26th):

Day 1 - "Nature Explorations!" We'll spend our day learning just what makes the natural areas so cool, including animal games, track explorations, a bug hunt, and more! Location: Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve in Cupertino.

Day 2 - "Wetlands Wonders!" Come learn about some unique (and fascinating!) Shoreline history, explore the baylands, work through a scavenger hunt and more! We might even get to play some Victorian-era games. Location: Rengstorff House and Shoreline Lake in Mountain View.

Day 3 - "All About Birds!" Bird watching, bird walks, bird crafts, bird stories, and so much more. Location: McClellan Ranch Preserve in Cupertino.

Day 4 - "Bugs and the Creek!" Come and learn what makes these creepy critters cool! Location: McClellan Ranch Preserve in Cupertino.

Day 5 - "Spaces and Species." Discover one of the area's hidden gems and learn what nature has to share.Location: Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve on Hwy 35. Transportation (from McClellan Ranch Preserve) will be provided.

There are also "Mini-Week" options (Mon-Wed or Wed-Fri). Register by June 20th.  For more information about the event, visit www.scvas.org (click on “Kids’ Corner”) or call 408-252-3740.
