Burglary Bust a Bust

A burglary in progress call at a home in the 23000 block of Gold Rush Drive brought Sheriff's deputies to find two keyless youngsters looking to enter a relative's home.

Sheriff's deputies responded to a burglary in progress in the 23000 block of Goldrush Drive Wednesday afternoon to find much ado about nothing.

A resident of the home, who wished not to be named in connection with the false report, said that the two suspects were her grandchildren who didn't have keys to the home at the time.

The resident said neighbors had called the Sheriff's station to report a burglary in progress after seeing her grandchildren taking a screen off of a window at the home.

"They thought it was someone burglarizing the house," the resident said, "they didn't know they were my grandkids."

Another relative of the falsely identified burglary suspects said the rapid and thorough police response was likely heightened after a nearly four-hour manhunt for three burglary suspects took place in the same neighborhood on April 18.

senior Giselle Awabdy had hopped aboard one Sheriff's patrol car for a ride-along just minutes before deputies responded to the area.

Awabdy said she has witnessed around two arrests per ride-along in past trips, but Wednesday afternoon's burglary call netted zero.

However, witnessing the Sheriff's response brought back bad memories for Lorbeer Middle School eighth grader Fernando G. Lorenzo, who said his home nearby was burglarized in September of last year.

"Nobody was home then," Lorenzo said.

Lorenzo said he entered the home to find it ransacked. He ran to the aid of a neighbor, Alex Ing Kom, who also witnessed the response to Wednesday afternoon's reported burglary.

Sheriff's officials did not return a call for further information about the incident by the time of this post.
