Children Released in Trash Can Murder Case

Daniel Ortiz, 25, and Chanel Ortiz, 26, were released from a San Bernardino County jail Friday after being arrested in connection with the murder of their mother's boyfriend, 63-year-old Samuel Wiggins, Jr. of Diamond Bar.

Daniel and Chanel Ortiz, 25 and 26, were released from prison Friday, according to an Associated Press report. The siblings were arrested as accessories in a murder that their mother is suspected of committing.

The mother, 51-year-old Carmen Montenegro — who has also gone by the alias Montelongo, police officials said — was arrested Sunday after she was found wheeling a trash can containing of Diamond Bar.

The two children were arrested as accessories to the crime, but the AP report said the pair will not be charged. Officials declined to explain their release further to the AP.

On Thursday, former Mt. San Antonio College classmates of Daniel Ortiz remembered him as "just one of the guys" in a and James Choy — a former newspaper staff member with Ortiz — said he was "absolutely shocked" to hear of Ortiz's arrest.
