La Puente Escapes with the 38-36 Result in Third Place Game

Nogales had three chances to win the game in the final minute of the game but couldnt capitalize.

ROWLAND HEIGHTS – The third time was not the charm for Nogales in the third place game of El Monte’s “Take of the Turkey” tournament as La Puente escaped with a 38-36 victory Saturday night.

Nogales had three chances to win the game in the last minute, but were unable to capitalize on each opportunity.

After a slow first quarter, which ended 8-6, La Puente outscored Nogales 15-7 In the second quarter to take a 10 point lead heading into halftime.

Shaunte Castenada led nogales with 11 points, eight rebounds, four steals and an assist. Joseph Fores and Victor Rendon each added six points and Joe Borjon tallied five points but helped out defensively with six rebounds.

Nogales (3-4) however wouldn’t go away, as they slowly clawed back into the game, outscoring La Puente 17-6 in the third quarter to take a brief 30-29 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Johnny Quiroz led the way for the Warriors (5-0) with 12 points, six rebounds three assists and an assist. Alan Balguera added nine points, two rebounds and two steals, while Bryan Peneaza tallied six points.

Down 37-36 with less than a minute to play, Nogales had three chances to take the lead to win the game but lost possession on a charging foul.

La Puente then turned the ball over back to Nogales who weren’t unable to convert the open layup. After stealing the inbound pass, the Nobles once again missed the shot attempt which forced them to foul La Puente on its possession.

Quiroz made one of his two free throws to seal the game.

Nogales goes to 4-4 with a 63-47 win over Katella and will visit Rowland Friday night. Tipoff is set for 6:30pm.
