Nogales, Diamond Ranch wins; Walnut retains Branding Iron after game shortened by social media threat

MONTEBELLO – Nogales scored 21 unanswered points in the second half enroute to a 42-16 victory over host Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary Friday night in a non-conference matchup.
Senior running back Frankie Ibarra III ran for two scores and caught a scoring pass, all in the second half, and senior quarterback Eduardo Enriquez rushed for one more for the Nobles (1-0)
Perez finished 14 of 23 for 266 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, both in the first quarter.

After a scoreless first quarter, nogales finally drew first blood when he connected with Eric Galvan on an 18-yard scoring strike with about 10 minutes to play in the second quarter. David Mercado then took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for the Cardinal. A successful 2-point conversion briefly gives Cantwell a 8-7 lead.
Mercado was the Cardinal's top player, scoring both touchdowns via kick off returns of 90 and 92 yards, as well as picking off Enriquez once in the first quarter.

Nogales faces another tough test next week as it hosts Arroyo (0-1) a 24-42 loser to Bonita. Kickoff is at 7pm
WALNUT RETAINS BRANDING IRON IN 27-20 VICTORY, DESPITE SOCIAL MEDIA SCARE DURING GAME
The Branding iron game, the annual rivalry matchup between Walnut and Diamond Bar High schools was cut short due to a social media scare, which proved to be a false alarm. Walnut was declared the winner after leading 27-20 at the time of the stoppage
Senior quarterback Jared Arellano ran 12 times for 125 yards and three touchdowns for the Mustangs who won the annual showdown for the second year in succession.
