Man Self-Barricades Inside Car For Hours, No Arrests Made

A man was suspected of calling in a fake robbery, then refused to exit his car when the police came.

WALNUT, CA — A four-hour standoff in the parking lot of a Walnut gas station ended with no arrests made, authorities said Thursday morning.

Deputies arrived at the Grand Avenue and Amar Road Chevron station, where a man reported a fake robbery, according to reports from SGVcitywatch. As officers responded, he retreated into his car and remained there, refusing to come out, according to Deputy Eric Ortiz of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies fired rubber bullets and bean bag rounds at the vehicle, but the man stayed inside the car.

He was communicative with authorities, according to Ortiz.

The suspect wrote notes that he held up to the windshield to respond to questions but still refused to exit the car.

It was almost 10 p.m. when deputies determined that no crime had been committed. The unidentified man was not posing a threat to himself or the public, and the deputies left the location.

He later was detained early Thursday morning and was taken to an area hospital for a mental evaluation, Lt. Tom Giandomenico said.
