Taiwanese launch yellow vest movement to protest taxes
Thousands of protesters demand tax reform outside the Ministry of Finance in Taipei, Taiwan on Dec 27, 2018
‘Yellow Vest’ take the streets again in front of the Ministry of Finance, protesting against illegal tax bills and improper handling of tax disputes.
This is the third time the ‘yellow vest’ protestors have stepped out in large numbers to demand tax and legal reform in Taiwan. Protestors held slogans pointing out some of the major flaws of Taiwan’s tax system.
Tax victims wrote their stories on posters and made handprints in red to represent the pain and burden they suffered as a result of the unlawful or unfair tax bills they received. Victims told their accounts of injustice before the protestors and claimed that in order to avoid compulsory enforcement from being imposed on his her property, one would have to pay half of the tax bill while they appeal to the Ministry of Finance. Protestors believe that this is unconstitutional and a violation of human rights.

The Ministry of Finance sent a representative to receive an appeal letter for the Tai Ji Men case, which states that the tax bill should be revoked as the Supreme Court had ruled Tai Ji Men not guilty on July 13th 2007.
Protestors were unhappy with the representative’s response which dodged their main question of when the case would be solved. Protestors said they will come back if no action for reform is taken.
