1 Killed, 2 Injured As Car Goes Off I-80 In Dixon, Hits Building

Two people suffered major injuries and one person died in the crash off eastbound Interstate Highway 80 near Pitt School Road.

DIXON, CA — One person was killed and two others suffered major injuries when a driver went off the freeway in Dixon, and, according to witnesses, hit a tree and the side of a building, the California Highway Patrol said.

Alcohol- and/or drug impairment are suspected in the solo-vehicle crash, which was reported at 3:04 p.m. off eastbound Interstate Highway 80, just east of Pitt School Road, according to CHP Spokesman Miguel Camarena.

A 79-year-old man who was riding as a passenger in the 1997 white Toyota sedan died in the crash. He was identified by the Solano County coroner's office as Floyd Merchant of Sacramento.

A second person riding in the car suffered major injuries.

The driver of the car, a 56-year-old Sacramento woman, also suffered major injuries. Her name was not immediately released by the CHP.

One lane of eastbound I-80 was closed for over an hour Thursday afternoon as the crash was investigated.

The crash remains under investigation; anyone driving in the area at the time of the incident who has not already spoken with CHP is asked to call 707-428-2100.
