Life's Too Short Column: Denny’s Dining
On our way back from returning our grandchildren in the Sacramento area, we stopped at a Starbucks that had a huge banner out front saying they were open. We were required to wear face masks and although we were inside for several minutes standing at the register, the staff did not greet us or even seem to take notice of our waiting.
I finally asked if they were open as all the chairs and tables had been pushed aside and I wondered if maybe they weren't open after all. That’s when an employee said they were open but not for sitting inside yet. She cleared a counter of what looked like her bookkeeping and took our order. It made me realize employees may have to relearn how to do face-to-face customers after this long shutdown.
We later drove through downtown Davis just to see if there was any place to eat dinner, but it looked like Armageddon with no cars or people. After working in the heart of this bustling downtown with my children’s clothing and toy store for so many years, it was shocking to see. My husband wondered aloud about the terrible economic ramifications of no sales, no taxes, and no students during the coronavirus.
We came back to Dixon and as we pulled off the Pitt School Road exit, I saw the banner in front of Denny’s that their dining room was open. Needless to say, we screeched into the parking lot and I will tell you, the service was wonderful and the food was plentiful. I almost ordered the Grand Slam but in a moment of pure nostalgia, I ordered the Country-fried Steak. I admit I haven’t had that in years due to committing to healthier eating, but it was perfectly delicious. Kudos to Denny’s for being ready and prepared for the 'lift off!'
