Alegria Celebrates 20 Years in Silver Lake

Home-style recipes from a Mexican palate have long been a habit at Silver Lake's Alegria.Indeed, Nadine Trujillo's restaurant celebrates 20 years of fresh, unpretentious, absolutely delicious cuisine this spring.

But Alegria's always been about more than food. It's a center for community meetings. Local artists exhibit art on the walls.

Musicians like Dave Alvin stop by and have a meal when they're in the area. Trujillo herself serves on the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council.

Trujillo's had some tough times lately. Her house was robbed in August, and she lost a number of important possessions including a computer. But she kept on going, as so many have come to expect.

For her persistence and accomplishment, Trujillo will be honored Friday with a tribute and toast from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Alegria. Patrons have also been celebrating all week with special low prices, some dating from 1993 when the restaurant opened.
