Concerts Near Echo Park-Silver Lake And LA County This Week
Here's a round-up of live music in LA County this week. Plus, a Q&A with Dutch DJ and producer San Holo.

ECHO PARK, CA – There are a ton of great shows to catch this week in Los Angeles County, and we've gathered a list of live music from twenty of the county's top music venues for this week's round-up. From blues, to throwbacks, to indie rock, and electronic, there's something for everyone to see.
This week, Patch caught up with Sander van Dijck, better known as San Holo, a Dutch DJ, musician and record producer who founded the label Bitbird. San Holo's first album, aptly named Album1, was released via Bitbird in September 2018 and debuted at #7 on the Billboard Dance and Electronic Albums chart.
San Holo is performing at the Shrine Expo Hall on Friday, Dec. 14.

Emily Holland: How would you describe your music to someone who's never heard it?
Sander van Dijck: The first two words always jump to mind are nostalgic and melancholic. I like nostalgia a lot, it’s a very beautiful thing. I love it when you hear a song and it takes you back to the time when you first heard it or when it makes you feel like you did at a certain time in your life.

EH: How do you think your background with guitar schooling and teaching has played into the development of your current music?
SVD: I think it has influenced me a lot in the way I write songs. The first thing I usually do when I try to write something new is grab my guitar and actually write most of it on there before I translate or record it into Ableton. Especially with the album, I wanted to bridge the gap between my two musical "worlds" of guitar-playing inspiration and the more contemporary EDM stuff I had been making as San Holo seamlessly without making it sound like I was forcing it.
EH: I frequently find people who are either rock fans or electronic music fans, but your music seems accessible to people of both groups. How are you able to balance the two?
SVD: First of all, It’s amazing to see how open-minded the fans have been in response to the album. I guess I’ve been able to find a way to blend the two without them fighting or sounding too forced. I think both groups of fans just try to appreciate what I’m trying to do which I’m very thankful for, all you can really ask is that your fans try stay open-minded and I’m so blessed that they all did.
EH: I read that you were once a "ghost producer." How was that different from what you're making now? (Do they have different styles? Do you prefer the recognition that comes with having your name attached to music you're making?)
SVD: I think the biggest difference is that you don’t have the full freedom to do whatever you want when you make something for someone else because it’s not really your vision, you’re just executing on somebody else’s. And I’m someone that prefers to have full creative freedom. The recognition is great but at the end of the day I just like to make music.
EH: What artists have influenced your sound?
SVD: Sigur Ros, What So Not, Bon Iver, Explosions in the Sky, Maurice Ravel, Spinvis... I could go on forever, there are so many. I like being exposed to a lot of different genres. Like with Bitbird, I only believe in good music and not in genres.
EH: Who are you listening to right now?
SVD: At the moment, I have Analogue Dear’s ‘small gestures’ EP on repeat. We just released it with Bitbird and it’s so good! Definitely go check it out if you haven’t already.
