Gomez Education Bill Signed by Governor Brown

A bill ensuring Community College Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) and Disabled Students, Programs and Services (DSPS) students will continue to have priority enrollment when registering for classes was signed Thursday by Governor Jerry Brown. The bill, Assembly Bill 595, was authored by Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez.

“Access to quality, affordable education is personal to me,” Gomez said in a written statement.  “Community College changed my life and gave me the tools I needed to succeed. I am humbled to be able to give back and help students, many facing the same obstacles I did, by ensuring priority enrollment for EOPS and DSPS students.” 

Community college students participating in Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) and/or Disabled Students, Programs and Services (DSPS) have historically been eligible through Title 5 regulations to top tier priority enrollment. However, the Chancellor’s Office determined in 2012 that a modification in education code was necessary to continue to offer top tier priority enrollment to students in these programs.

Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez represents the 51st Assembly District, which includes Silver Lake, Echo Park and Eagle Rock.
