Silver Lake's Tokio Florist Has It All: History And Wallpaper
The people of Silver Lake battled to protect this local landmark, and now it's time for another chapter.
LOS ANGELES, CA —There is a reason the people of Silver Lake fought to have this old home declared a historic monument. It has two things in abundance: history and wallpaper.
Originally built in Los Feliz on Los Feliz Boulevard, the Tudor Revival mansion was moved to its current site by the Kozawa family, which ran the famed Tokio Florist out of the property for decades, according to The Eastsider. Like so many other Japanese-Americans living in LA during WWII, the family was rounded up and transported to the Manzanar internment camp. But they were among the lucky ones because a family friend kept their bustling flower shop busy while they were gone, and it was ready for them when that dark chapter in American history ended, The Eastsider reported.
As realtor.com notes, the shop became a favorite of Hollywood's biggest stars, including "Walt Disney himself, Ginger Rogers, Mae West (and her pet monkey!) and Greta Garbo - who would roll up in her limo and get her usual order of sweet peas."

The Kozawa's closed shop a decade ago, but the community continues to rally around the historic home with high hopes that the new owner will protect it, maybe turning it into another business that lasts for decades as a Silver Lake staple. We here at Patch just hope the new owners keep the red bathroom wallpaper.
