October 18, 2019—Oakland’s newest film festival, presented by 21-year-old nonprofit Jackson Orthopedic Foundation (JOF), will screen short films on orthopedic health on Sunday, November 3, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. The Second Annual Canes Film Festival & Gala, a family-friendly event, will be held at Samuel Merritt University (SMU), Health Education Center, Bechtel Room, 400 Hawthorne Avenue (at Summit) in Oakland.

The festival celebrates more than two decades of orthopedic education and service by the local nonprofit to improve the lives of people with musculoskeletal conditions. JOF is also inviting new filmmakers in Bay Area college film programs to submit films to the event. Award-winning shorts will be chosen by the audience and announced following the screenings. Other event highlights include special guest Dr. Stephen Hill of SMU's Motion Analysis Research Center and a tribute to JOF's co-founder, Dr. William S. T. Jackson (1927–2019).

Proceeds from the festival and gala will benefit JOF’s three flagship programs: Healthcare Immersion Program (HIP), Orthopedic Primary Care (OPC), and Orthopedic Injection Workshops. These programs offer continuing healthcare education to college students and practicing clinicians who are interested in becoming more knowledgeable healthcare providers.
