Apartments, Shops Could Reduce Parking at El Cerrito del Norte BART Station

The City of El Cerrito has entered into an exclusive negotiating agreement with a San Francisco firm that is proposing a mixed residential-retail development by the El Cerrito del Norte BART Station.

Nearly 300 apartments above ground-floor retail shops may eventually replace a parking lot at the El Cerrito del Norte BART Station, according to an article published Thursday on insidebayarea.com.

The City of El Cerrito owns the two-acre plot, which once housed a Mayfair grocery store. City officials have entered into an exclusive 15-month negotiating agreement with Build Inc. of San Francisco, which has tentative plans to buy the property and develop it with rental units and stores, the article says.

A partner with Build Inc. described the proposal as "a transit-oriented, mixed-use residential development."

The site is bounded by San Pablo Avenue, Kearney Street, Knott Avenue and Cutting Boulevard. The plans include turning a portion of Kearney Street into a public plaza.

A City of El Cerrito staff report prepared in 2011 recommended allowing buildings up to six stories high and 70 to 100 residential units per acre within a quarter-mile of each of the city's two BART stations.
