Crews Extinguish Fire At Richmond Homeless Encampment

An early morning fire beneath a freeway overpass was quickly handled Sunday, the Richmond Fire Department said.

RICHMOND, CA — An early morning fire beneath a freeway overpass was quickly handled Sunday, the Richmond Fire Department said.

Two engine companies responded to the fire reported about 4:40 a.m. at a homeless encampment at Interstate Highway 580 and Central Avenue, and had it contained in about 30 minutes.

There were no injuries and loss was confined to items belonging to the camp residents.

The location was a little east of a vegetation fire Friday by Point Isabel Regional Shoreline.

Battalion Chief Noah Brownlow said the Richmond department often gets five to 10 calls in a day for fires "along the freeway, railroad tracks, creeks" and other locations of camps in the city.
