El Cerrito City Council Candidate Nomination Period Extended

Nomination documents must be filed by Aug. 12.

The deadline for filing nomination documents has been extended to Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. due to one or more incumbent officer not filing by the deadline of Friday, August 7, 2020.

Persons interested in running for the office of City Councilmember for the City of El Cerrito in the upcoming November 3, 2020 election may obtain nomination documents and a Candidate’s Packet from the El Cerrito City Clerk during the normal business hours indicated below. The General Municipal Election will fill three seats on the City Council for four-year terms. The successful candidates will be installed in the month of December 2020.

To be eligible to hold office as a City Councilmember, a person must be 18 years old and a registered voter residing within the boundaries of the City of El Cerrito.

The Nomination Paper must be signed by at least 20 and no more than 30 persons who are registered to vote in the City of El Cerrito. Signatures must be collected on the Nomination Paper issued by the City Clerk.

Each candidate is required to file a Statement of Economic Interests disclosing investment, income, business positions, and interests in real property with nomination documents. Candidates may also prepare a statement that includes their name and a brief description of no more than 250 words setting forth the candidate’s education and qualifications. The statement is filed with the nomination documents, on the form provided by the City clerk, and is included in the voter pamphlet mailed to voters. The charge to each candidate for providing this service is estimated to be $440 and is payable at the time of filing nomination documents.

All forms required for nomination and election to the City Council in the City of El Cerrito are issued by and filed with the El Cerrito City Clerk. Appointments to obtain, review and submit nomination documents are required to ensure safety, accessibility, and ample time to thoroughly review the filing requirements.

The City Clerk’s office is located at City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Avenue. Please note that office hours may differ during the COVID-19 pandemic. As of this publication, City Hall remains closed to the public, and services are offered by appointment only during regular business hours of Mon./Wed. 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Tues./Thurs 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
