El Cerrito High Students Found with BB Gun, Marijuana

Two El Cerrito High School students were detained for possession of a BB gun and marijuana on school property Friday, according to police.

Police said two backpack searches at the school, located at 540 Ashbury Ave., led to the detainment of the two students.

At about 10:35 a.m., a school staff member detected an odor of marijuana coming from a student's backpack, police said. The school resource officer searched the backpack and found a black semi-automatic BB gun pistol, police said. The juvenile was detained by El Cerrito police and released to his parents, police said.

Later that day, at about 1:50 p.m., a second backpack search was conducted after a student left his backpack in a classroom. Another student attempted to retrieve the backpack but was confronted by a teacher, according to police A small amount of marijuana was found in the backpack. El Cerrito police detained the juvenile before releasing him to the custody of his parents, police said.
